Data Science for Social Good Portugal is an open community of data scientists, data lovers, and data enthusiasts that want to tackle problems that really matter. Which personal data do we collect and why?
1 . Website
What is gathered:
- Uploaded images to the website (e.g. in the blogposts). If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Why it is gathered:
- Website display.
Retention period:
- Indefinitely, opt-out done via email.
Storage and interactions:
The data is stored in our servers and WordPress, accessed by the communication team in DSSG PT.
What is gathered:
- Your email, contact message, and contact title. It is sent to our main email address and stored only there.
Why it is gathered:
- To be able to reply to your contacts.

- Indefinitely, opt-out done via email/contact form.
Storage and interactions:
The data is stored in our personal servers and WordPress, accessed by the communication team in DSSG PT.
What is gathered:
- If you leave a comment/message on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

What is gathered:
- Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) from other websites which behave in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
- These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. We have no control over how these websites use your data. Embedded content will always be explicitly designed/styled as such so that users can check the specific privacy policies of those websites.
We also collect data regarding your interactions with our website, using Google Analytics.

- To send newsletters/emails related with DSSG PT activities periodically.

Storage and interactions:
The data is stored on Mailchimp, accessed by the communication team in DSSG PT.
2. Volunteer Registration
What is gathered
- Email address (mandatory)
- Professional sector (opt-in)

- Answer to “How would you identify yourself? (Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Researcher, …)”
- Answer to “Tell us about a data project you were involved in and are proud of?” (opt-in)

To have a volunteer profile for project recruitment.

The data is stored on the private DSSG PT Google Drive, accessed by the Volunteer Management team in DSSG PT and DSSG PT current President/Vice Presidents.

Why it is gathered:
- To keep track of each Project’s team and be able to reach out to Makers during/after a Project

3. Beneficiary Data
What is gathered
- Beneficiary Name
- Responsible Person’s Name

- Phone Number (opt-in)

Why it is gathered:
- To have the beneficiaries contact.
Retention period:
- Indefinitely, opt-out of any or all these topics done via email/contact form.

The data is stored on the private DSSG PT Google Drive, accessed by the Beneficiaries Management team in DSSG PT and DSSG PT current President/Vice Presidents.
4. Mailchimp (newsletter)
What is gathered
- Email opens per user (Opt-in on registration)
- List of user emails
- Main user language (if registered via registration form)
Why it is gathered:
- To check for inactive volunteers.
Retention period:
- Indefinitely, opt-out done via email/contact form or via the opt-out button sent in emails.
Storage and interactions:
The data is stored on Mailchimp, accessed by the communication team in DSSG PT.
Who do we share your data with?
The data generated during your website visits/interaction is not shared with anyone outside DSSG’s Lead Team. Whenever possible, as mentioned above, data is restricted to the people who will need its access.
What rights do you have over your data?
You can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. For that, send an e-mail to hello AT dssg.pt specifying which data to remove, following the terminology of this Privacy Policy. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements
The Site allows users to register with DSSG PT to receive periodic updates with information and register as a volunteer. Registrants can register online and are required to provide DSSG PT with their e-mail address. By registering with DSSG PT, you are consenting to have your personal data transferred to and processed in Portugal. We will not share your personal information with third parties. We will email you from time to time with general service-related announcements, but you can opt-out of this if desired (by contacting us via the email hello AT dssg.pt or clicking the “opt-out” button in our emails
Disclosure to Third Parties: We also may disclose your personal information as required by applicable law and may perform disclosures that are necessary or advisable to: (a) protect our rights, safety, or property; (b) enforce the Terms of Use; (c) respond to your requests for services; (d) to comply with legal process; or (d) to comply with or as permitted by applicable laws and regulations.
